In this article we discuss:
“How games or challenges can help participants solve real life task. In Information Technology, Videogames and Fitness.
WHY DO WE PLAY?
Some Researchers propose that playing brain games like sudoku and crosswords can help you improve your memory, which starts declining as early as your 20’s. Even though this can be debatable the link between this game and it’s benefits is easy to comprehend.
In nature we see young cubs play intensely with each other. Again instinctively many people came to conclude that is process is a part of their real life preparation. In other words that they will become better hunters or avoid better danger, depending their position in their food chain. Opinion that followed that idea, was that game is so important to young primates for brain development and social behavior skills. On way or another games can serve different kind of purposes.
As being defined in Wikipedia :
Gamification is the application of game-design elements and game principles in non-game contexts. Gamification commonly employs game design elements to improve user engagement, organizational productivity, flow, learning, crowdsourcing, employee recruitment and evaluation, ease of use, usefulness of systems, physical exercise, traffic violations, voter apathy, and more. A collection of research on gamification shows that a majority of studies on gamification find it has positive effects on individuals. However, individual and contextual differences exist.
A human-based computation game or game with a purpose (GWAP) is a human-based computation technique of outsourcing steps within a computational process to humans in an entertaining way (gamification). Luis von Ahn first proposed the idea of “human algorithm games”, or games with a purpose (GWAPs), in order to harness human time and energy for addressing problems that computers cannot yet tackle on their own.
The tasks presented in these games are usually trivial for humans, but difficult for computers. These tasks include labeling images, transcribing ancient texts, common sense or human experience based activities, and more. Human-based computation games motivate people through entertainment rather than an interest in solving computation problems.
HOW TO GROUP GAMES
Team or Ιndividual
Games with a Team or Individual
Games to play alone or with others
You can play Alone, or against the computer or against others.
Physical, Digital or Phygital
In the videogame context
We might play a first person shooter or a third person shooter. Some might choose a mmorpg that is an abbreviation for Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Apparently the second one is incorporating strategy in a different way. They have a different pace and duration. It is very interesting that there is an another world we can be immersed. Even though this world is imaginary, there are money there that some people are willing to exchange with real american dollars.
Against yourself or other
Even though it seems that it overlaps with our individual-team classification it is something different. This distinction is particularly important to sports, you can track your own improvement (play against yourself) or compare your performance with other individual’s. In the competitive sport context you need to use both, against yourself in training and preparation and against others in competition. In Fitness though goals can be undefined and therefore impossible to play against other and difficult to measure your own progress.
There are many different possible ways to cluster games. Many of us probably could think board games but that is a classification it would not be relevant to our post.
THINGS WE DO NOT LIKE DOING
One thing we are often hate doing is after a laundry to match all of the socks. This problem is manifests itself in houses all over the world. Different ways have been proposed to come to a solution. This product pins the socks together so you do not have to match them after washing. But is that really a solution? Cause you have to attach them (match) before the laundry.
What if we could change our desire to match them?
–We play a game at my house where we spread out the socks and we try to pair the socks. The person with the less pairs of socks has to pay dinner to the rest of the sock matchmakers.
Our actual socks.
We invite you to play our game! In that game you
